RM74

RM74 and trailer at Cosgrove on the Shepperton to Katamatite branchline in 1937.

RM74 is the most unique rail passenger vehicle in Victoria. One of 5 such vehicles entering service in 1937 for use on branchlines where the passengers offering didn’t even justify a railmotor, it could seat 10 people plus the driver.

Acquired from the former ARHS museum in 1990, it has been under long term restoration since then. In 2020 it was decide to send it off site to an expert in old cars and although delayed by Covid shutdowns it is on track to return to Daylesford Railway later in 2026 for the railway volunteers to complete the mechanical work.

It is on target to re-enter service sometime in 2026.

However, a few areas still need attention to complete the project faithfully in which we need assistance. These include the interior upholstery and trimming work, exterior painting, and a purpose build shed for long-term storage and protection of “The Tiger”.

If you have related skills and are interested in assisting, or alternatively if you’d like to contribute financially, we would love to hear from you.
