HISTORY

Built by the Australian Rolling Stock Company at Spotswood for the Victorian Railways, it commenced service as 30Dd, being renumbered and recoded to 28C in 1910. Built for use behind fast passenger trains, the C vans were relegated to slower and branchlines runs as more modern passenger carriages entered service through the 1910s.

Originally fitted with screw couplings, they were converted to auto couplings in the 1950s with stronger underframes, bogies and electric lighting. At this time they became a regular site behind the Diesel Electric Rail Motors (DERM) operating on the many branchlines north of Bendigo, with at times 2 C vans behind 1 DERM due to the parcels traffic and the flatness to the lines.

Upon its withdrawal in 1983, 28C was placed on the Heritage Register and allocated to Steamrail for mainline operations. When it became surplus to their requirements it reallocated to Daylesford railway and moved by road in 2007.

It is currenly stored pending restoration.
