ID/Name: 3 RT
Type: Locomotive
Description: Moore model 6-MFL series 1100 industrial locomotive
Built: 1962
Status: Operational - Yard limits only
3 RT was built by Malcolm Moore Road Machinery in Port Melbourne using a Massey Ferguson 65 R tractor frame with a Perkins 4 cylinder diesel engine. 3 RT followed a somewhat standard design for industrial locomotives of the time. 3 RT weighs six tonnes and had a nominal load capacity of 300 tonnes in low gear on level track.
SERVICE HISTORY
3 RT was purchased by Massey Ferguson for their Sunshine (Vic) manufacturing plant in 1962. It replaced steam loco F 176 for shunting within the plant and the Victorian Railways exchange sidings. At the time, most if not all of their manufactured product was railed from the plant throughout Victoria and interstate.
PRESERVATION JOURNEY
Daylesford Railway purchased 3 RT from Massey Ferguson for $3,000 in early 1988, following the closure of their manufacturing plant at Sunshine. It arrived at Daylesford in early April of that year, and has been an invaluable asset ever since.
FUN FACT
Of note, a similar rail tractor was built by Malcolm Moore Road Machinery for the Massey Ferguson plant in Sunshine (Brisbane Queensland). It is unknown if it survives.
