This elegant Walker rail car represents the second order of 153hp units from Walker Bros. in Wigan, England. Built to modernise Victoria's branch line services, the 32RM showcases the unique collaboration between British engineering and Australian craftsmanship. While the power units and controls were shipped from the UK, the car bodies were locally crafted by Martin and King in Malvern, with final assembly taking place at Newport Workshops.

SERVICE HISTORY
Originally introduced to replace steam-hauled mixed trains on branch lines like Healesville and Warburton, 32RM played a crucial role in modernising regional rail travel. As branch lines closed in the 1970s, it adapted to new roles, serving the Newport-Werribee shuttle and interurban routes to Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh.

PRESERVATION JOURNEY
Arriving in Daylesford in 1982, 32RM underwent an extensive frame-up restoration that began in 1993 to return it to its 1955 appearance. Completed in 2018, this meticulous work was completed to world-class museum standards. It remains one of our fleet’s most revered vehicles, and photographs feature heavily throughout our current website.

CURRENT STATUS
Due to its limited capacity, 32RM is not in regular service but remains a cherished part of our heritage fleet. You can experience this piece of railway history during school holidays, charter services, and special operating days throughout the year including special events such as the opening of the Bullarto Station in 2024.

FUN FACT
32RM ran the last passenger train service between Geelong and Ballarat in 1978.
