Ambulance
The “Ambulance Trolley” is truly unique as it was the only one of its type in Victoria and only one of three in Australia. Based on a 6W trolley the frame was extended to accommodate a stretcher, and a roof and enclosed front were attached to protect those on board. The engine in the Ambulance trolley was the same as the 6W’s, but a Holden gearbox was installed to allow the trolley to travel at low speeds only and prevent any injured persons from being shaken around. Another feature of this trolley was the installation of rubber blocks between the body and frame to help cushion the ride. The motor in the Ambulance trolley was also fitted with an electrical start to make starting easier in an emergency. The Ambulance trolley was built in 1969 after it was found that a road based ambulance would have difficulty negotiating all the tracks in the new Melbourne marshalling yard. Equipment on the trolley included a stretcher, back board and first aid kit (all of which are still in very good condition). The Ambulance trolley has been restored, but still requires the engine to be checked out and new curtains made. Even though this trolley was built it was never used to transport an injured worker, but shows that the railways were prepared for an emergency
