EXPERIMENTAL

ID/Name: Experimental
Type:
  Gangers (Patrolman) Trolley
Built: Late 1970’s
Status: Restored

Brief History

The Experimental trolley was an experiment to see if this type of vehicle was suitable for the Victorian system. Only one was made by the Victorian Railways and trialed from the late 1970’s onwards. This was an attempt to produce a cheap trolley in the tailway workshops using parts fro0m other vehicles.

The engine is the same as in the “6W” & “8W” trolleys and the bench seat is out of an old Harris Blue Train. The trolley is completely enclosed and has front, side and rear windows and even doors. The trolley is hydraulic drive and if the vehicle is not running when being moved the wheels will be locked up.

The car must not have been a success as it was the only one produced. It isn’t clear where it was used or if it left the workshops at all as no information is available. The trolley was not capable of being off tracked at any location without special equipment (e.g. trolley turntable).

State Significance

Of major state significance as an example of a trial of a new locally produced model of trolley providing covered facilities for staff.
